UN calls to strengthen global cooperation against corruption

(Prensa Latina) The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) continued a special session of debates on Friday to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against corruption.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres claimed that fighting such a crime is pivotal to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, and the promotion of peace and protection of human rights.

Guterres welcomed the establishment of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network), as a step to the right direction.

GlobE Network provides avenues for the secure exchange of information on specific cases, legislation, intelligence and anti-corruption tools.

Since Wednesday, representatives of several countries have debated ways to crack down on bribery, money laundering and abuse of power, as well as the negative consequences of these crimes in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Participants acknowledged the impact of corruption on the access to basic services, and noted that it can also increase poverty and inequality.
