Tokyo Olympics will not have a closing ceremony reception

(Prensa Latina) Japanese authorities on Friday informed the cancellation of the traditional Olympic reception offered by the head of State at the end of the Games in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Tamayo Marukawa, secretary of State in charge of the Olympics and Paralympics in Tokyo, made the announcement on Friday in a press conference.

The reception was scheduled for August 8, when the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games will be held.

Foreign heads of State and those related to the International Olympic Committee would have been invited by Japan Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga to a reception in a hotel in the capital.

However, the pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus brought about the cancellation of the reception, as well as others events related to the Games.

One of them would be the ceremony to be held at the National Theater in the District of Shiyoda to mark the beginning of IOC’s meeting in Tokyo.

The Government also asked the foreign heads of State to limit to 12 their entourage or ministers for Sport who would attend the Games in order to prevent the spread of the disease
