Indonesia warns about possible tsunami after earthquake

(Prensa Latina) Indonesia’s National Geophysics and Meteorological Agency on Wednesday warned about aftershocks and a possible tsunami after a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that shook the Moluccas islands.

Those who live along the shores of Japutih and Apiahus, on Seram island, must remain vigilant, the agency said in a press release.

Authorities advised local residents, in an important region for the domestic nickel sector, to move away from the coast to higher grounds.

Indonesia, which is the home to one-fourth of the world´s reserve of that metal, is surrounded by active volcanoes and tectonic faults.

The 6.1-magnitude seism that took place a few hours ago, is the second in less than a week, was located at a depth of 10 kilometers off Seram island’s coast and was followed by at least 13 aftershocks.
