(Prensa Latina) Uruguayan organizations and networks in defense of childhood on Tuesday organized a campaign against the government’s bills on shared custody of children, which they consider ignore the principle of children’s supreme interest.
Both bills, promoted with a similar direction in Parliament by the ruling coalitions, the Colorado and Cabildo Abierto parties, have been criticized by Monica Botero, president of the Women’s Institute. For the critical organizations, under the titles of Shared Parental Responsibility and Parenting Co-responsibilities, ‘which sound good but are misleading, children and adolescents are ignored and the documents are not intended to benefit most of the Uruguayan families.’
They argue in a joint statement that the current regulation does comply with these rights as it guarantees that ‘minors are heard’ in separation due to conflicts between their parents and it takes care of ‘their progressive autonomy.’
The Committee on Children’s Rights of Uruguay, the Uruguayan Network against Domestic and Sexual Violence, the Network for the Integrated National Care System, the Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights and the Intersocial Feminist participate in this protests.
