Teachers announce hunger strike if Government does not approve Intercultural Education Law in Ecuador

Dozens of teachers from the National Union of Educators of Ecuador (UNE) protested outside the Constitutional Court to demand that the temporary suspension of the validity of the reform to the Organic Law of Intercultural Education (LOEI) be lifted.

In May of this year, the Constitutional Court admitted a lawsuit against the Reform Law to the Organic Law of Intercultural Education and granted the precautionary measure of provisional suspension until the case is resolved.

Given this, the teachers have held multiple demonstrations to reject the decision of the Constitutional Court. In the same way, they warned that on July 1 they will carry out the torch march and on July 5 they will carry out a hunger strike.

For his part, Hilario Beltrán, director of the UNE Guayas, indicated that they convened themselves to defend the rights recovered in the Reform Law of the LOEI, the reinstatement of unrelated teachers, the specialties baccalaureate, the excellence bonus, the recognition of the affiliation to the IESS of the popular educators, the system of protection to the students of harassment and sexual abuse.

«We are in defense of public education. This law restores peace of mind to students and parents. It is not about salary increase, but about salary equalization.
