In Ecuador patients with catastrophic illnesses request to be treated

The representatives of the organizations of catastrophic diseases asked the authorities to be treated, because there are patients who die while waiting for medicines.

Personnel from the Zonal Coordination 8 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) was in charge of receiving the directors of the organizations who complain about the lack of medication and treatment to fight their illnesses.

Dora García, representative of the United Organizations of Rare and Catastrophic Diseases of Ecuador, regretted the wait.

The citizen said that health is in crisis with hospitals without medicines, reagents or supplies for care.

To this complaint she added that there are kidney clinics with non-payment and there is a high risk of dying because of not being able to continue with the treatments.

Seven organizations of catastrophic patients with chronic lung diseases, acromegaly, chronic kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, rheumatic diseases, among others, also made their claims known.

García pointed out that given the need to be cared for and want to live, they assume the risk of leaving their homes hoping not to get the coronavirus.

“We know that we are in the transition stage of the Government, but we cannot wait any longer, the patients are dying,” she exclaimed during the sit-in that took place yesterday outside the Makro building, in the north of Guayaquil.

The shortage of medicines, supplies and equipment in hospitals is already known by Vice President Alfredo Borrero and the Minister of Health, Ximena Garzón, and they have committed to providing a solution to this problem. But for those who have catastrophic illnesses and require hospitalization, the situation is more complicated, because a week they must spend USD 400 because there are no supplies and they must buy.

Cristina Freire, representative of the Ecuadorian Dialysis Association, said that with the pandemic the situation of patients with catastrophic diseases worsened, even more than 3,500 patients died from various causes related to the lack of their treatment or from Covid-19 itself .

Freire explained that there are 12,500 kidney patients nationwide who are at risk of complicating themselves and losing their lives due to the lack of allocation so that they have their three dialysis a week and do not die.

She added that there are 85 dialysis centers that are no longer able to treat kidney patients. “It is not only because of the supplies, it is also the staff that is unpaid and no more staff can be hired,” stressed the representative of the Dialysis Association of Ecuador.
