Ecuador registers more than 21,300 deaths from COVID-19

Juan Zapata Silva, president of the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE) and general director of the Integrated Security Service ECU 911, reported to the Right to Health Commission the situational status of the pandemic in the country.

He took the opportunity to point out the need to address the draft Law for Health Emergency Management due to Pandemic, which allows, through the respective instances, to better manage the crisis in the face of a pandemic and save lives.

Francisco Pérez, Undersecretary of Surveillance of the Ministry of Public Health, explained the evolution of incivilities and the epidemiological status. According to Pérez, until the previous week, 446,633 infected with COVID -19 were registered and more than a million cases have been discarded.

Ecuador reports 15,713 deaths confirmed by coronavirus and 5,591 suspects. He warned that there is discrepancy in the data and mortality reports generated by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Inec); therefore, they work with this institution to consolidate the information.

He indicated that there is a cumulative incidence rate of 2,550 infected people per 100,000 inhabitants. A mortality rate of 89 people per 100,000 inhabitants. The group that accumulates the most cases are those who are over 65 years of age.

He maintained that, as of week 16 of this year, a sustained decrease in cases has been achieved. Pichincha, Carchi and Galapagos are the provinces that have had the highest number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

“Our aspiration is that as the months go by we will have a positivity rate of less than 15%, which would be optimal. This year there is less mortality precisely due to the best diagnosis, the best treatment and in part due to the medical knowledge that has been improving on the issue of the pandemic ”, he declared.

Zapata complemented the information with the topic of the evolution of incivilities, which is the fundamental factor of contagion, measured from ECU 911. Incivilities, especially in agglomerations, do not guarantee social distancing and when talking about parties, libators, scandals, consumption of liquor deteriorate the handling of biosafety measures, he warned.

He revealed that 214,738 agglomerations have been registered; 78,425 parties; about half a million libadores; more than 475 thousand scandals. He highlighted that, in April and May, the excess mortality rate was 118% and today we are at 29%.

Health Emergency Management

The Commission advocated knowledge of the draft Law for Health Emergency Management due to Pandemic, which raises regulations to restrict the rights of freedom of mobility and assembly, without the need to establish a state of exception, in circumstances such as the current COVID-19 pandemic. , in those areas that the Health authority determines as health alert zones.
