(Prensa Latina) The United Nations Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) stated that some 230,000 people have been displaced by this year’s clashes and violence in Myanmar and are in need of assistance.
The agency announced that aid operations are underway, but the insecurity in the country is an obstacle.
The Human Rights special envoy to the UN for Myanmar warned early this month about ‘mass deaths’ for hunger and disease as a result of fighting on the east of the country.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the coup in last February 1st, and a brutal police repression against opposers has left over 800 dead, according to a local human rights watch group.
Even though protests are not taking place on a daily basis in cities anymore, clashes still take place in rural areas of the country, where government’s forces engage the militias.
The military took control of power using violence, claiming irregularities in last year’s elections, which were ruled out by competent authorities.
