The IACHR cannot order anyone’s freedom, according to the Minister of Government.
Government Minister Maria Paula Romo insisted on the government regime’s speech on precautionary measures granted by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) in favor of the Prefect of Pichincha Paola Pabon, who is accused of the alleged crime of rebellion.
Romo said that precautionary measures do not ask the Government to release anyone, or to order freedom, because that could not do so either. In addition, she noted that the Government does not decide whether a person is released or not.
According to the minister, the IACHR precautionary measures read that the State has the duty to guarantee the integrity and life of the people. “We will do so,” she said.
She insisted that the measures for Pabon, Virgilio Hernandez, and Christian Gonzalez do not represent a guilty or innocent statement.
