Negotiation over protests in Colombia remains stalled

(Prensa Latina) The National Strike Committee today blamed the Government of Iván Duque for the stagnation in negotiations of the emergency document due to its delay in signing the preliminary agreement on Colombia’s social protest in Colombia.

We regret that the national government does not have an answer on the preliminary agreement we reached regarding guarantees for carrying out social protests, said Francisco Maltés, president of Colombia’s Union Federation.

Therefore, this delaying attitude shows who the responsible for the strike is, the Government of President Duque, which does not understand the complexity of the situation in the country, he emphasized.

We have agreed. He said, a meeting for next Sunday and we hope to reach an agreement on the guarantees to exercise social protest, the methodology for the development of the negotiation of the emergency document and the setting up of the negotiating table.

Last Monday the Committee … unanimously approved the preliminary agreement reached with the executive regarding guarantees for the exercise of social protest and the Government postponed its signing.

The largest social outbreak in the recent history of Colombia marks one month today since the start of the national strike against a tax reform that would affect the majority.

Since April 28, the protests continue in the streets and also the police violence against the protesters with a toll of 60 dead.
