UN follows closely incidents in Colombia

(Prensa Latina) UN authorities are carefully following incidents in Colombia, where some police violence events have been reported over the last month, according to Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, Farhan Haq.

In this regard, Haq restated the UN call to respect the right of people to protest peacefully and condemned action by the security forces in accordance with human rights. All acts of violence and vandalism must stop, the spokesman said, harping on the need for an inclusive and peaceful talk to find a solution.

Haq pointed out that the Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Colombia Carlos Ruiz Massieu, alongside the Catholic Church, serves as guarantor and mediator of talks between the Colombian Government and the National Strike Committee.

Such a process also includes the involvement of Juliette de Rivero, head of the UN High Commissioner Office for Human Rights in Colombia.

Likewise, Haq called for an investigation to be guaranteed into manifold reports of human rights violations in the framework of popular riots.
