(Prensa Latina) Brazilian Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga on Thursday sidestepped questions about the use of chloroquine for Covid-19 patients, as it´s proposed and defended by President Jair Bolsonaro.
‘I did not authorize the use chloroquine in my administration. I´m not aware of any distribution,’ Queiroga said in the Parliamentary Investigation Commission inquiring about government’s management in the face of the pandemic.
At all times, Dr. Queiroga steered clear of not giving a negative or affirmative answer on whether or not he supports Bolsonaro’s position that chloroquine should be used preventively to treat Covid-19.
Similarly, he declined to answer about the situation in the ministry when he took office a month and a half ago.
He said that he is not in a position to make value judgments or censor Bolsonaro´s personal standpoints.
‘My role is not to lash out at Bolsonaro or other ministers,’ but trying to ‘use my ability to convince all Brazilians to join us’ and ‘keep necessary care,’ he stressed.
Regarding possible isolations or limitations, Queiroga stated that ‘these extreme measures can be applied in specific situations in some municipality,’ but he deep-sixed that the measures can be clamped nationwide, while he assured that the only effective formula against the pandemic is mass vaccination.
