Ecuador registers 393,048 cases of COVID-19 and 18,907 deaths

Ecuador registers 1,806 new infections and 44 more deaths in the last 24 hours. This Wednesday, May 5, 2021, the country has a total of 393,048 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 18,907 deaths due to the pandemic.

According to the report of the Ministry of Health, in Ecuador there are 13,726 deceased with a positive diagnosis and another 5,181 died with suspicion of carrying the respiratory virus.

The mortality rate increased since March of this and in April the highest peak was registered. On average, 72 general deaths have been registered in the country. In the same month, but from 2020, the average was 40.

According to epidemiological reports, from January 1 to May 5, 2021, there were 4,856 deaths due to the pandemic. While, for all causes of death, there are 7,087 deaths in these four months, which means 2,763 more than that reported in the same period of 2020; that is, an increase of 61% and when compared to 2019, deaths increased 103%.

Hospital occupancy has not yet decreased. There are 13 consecutive days with more than 2,000 hospitalized daily. This Wednesday, there are 2,060 internees: 1,440 are stable and 620 with a reserved forecast. This, despite the fact that 453 more people were discharged from hospital.

The authorities also confirmed that the P1 variant of COVID-19, from Brazil, is already transmitted in a community way in the country. The British and New York variant are also communal.
