Over 1,000 children, adolescents died of Covid-19 in Brazil

(Prensa Latina) More than 1,000 children and adolescents have died of Covid-19 in Brazil since March 2020, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) and the Ministry of Health revealed.

Taking into account this figure, CNN Brazil assured that a year after the outbreak of the pandemic, some initial impressions about the pathogen were shown to be erroneous and, ‘among them, the disease only affected the elderly, chronically ill patients and children, and adolescents would be immune.’

CNN Brazil insisted that severe Covid-19 is rare in infants and young people, but the figure of more than 1,000 deaths is worrying and reinforces the need for care.

However, the figure is still considered low in relation to the general population and compared to other causes of death.

Statistics should be used to call parents’ attention, but this is not a reason to despair, according to experts, CNN Brazil reported.

An article published in Nature points out that after an exhaustive review of studies in patients infected with Covid-19, the Multi-system Inflammatory Syndrome disproportionately affected children and adolescents in African, Afro-Caribbean or Spanish ethnic groups.
