Chile’s Minister expects better health situation for elections

(Prensa Latina) Chile’s Minister of Health Enrique Paris showed optimism on Monday about the celebration of the elections of May 15 and 16 in a favorable situation regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

On a press briefing to give the daily report on the Covid-19 situation in the country, Paris noted, ‘for the May elections, we will have much lower figures than those we saw in the first week of April.’

In 12 days, over 15 million voters are called to a ‘mega-election’ for regional governors, mayors, councilors and the 155 members of the Convention that will draft the new Constitution, which is considered the most important event of the year in Chile.

That appointment with the polls was scheduled for April; but it was postponed due to the pandemic and, contrary to what was expressed by the health authority, some experts assure that now the Covid-19 figures are worse than then.

Paris was confident that for the elections there will be at least seven million people vaccinated with two doses, and that ‘maintaining the sanitary measures and the protocols made with the Electoral Service, we will have a process within the safety margins.’
