In just one pandemic year, eight million people live in a situation of food insecurity in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, according to data from the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).

The executive director of the World Food Program (WFP), David Beasley, spoke of “the dramatic figures” of food insecurity that “were exacerbated by the pandemic.” A year ago this region registered 2,000,000 people in this condition and today there are more than 8,000,000.

“The number of people, as we would say, marching towards hunger, has quadrupled in just one year,” said David Beasley this Wednesday, April 21, 2021.

In addition, the PMA director warned that if something is not done to feed and care for Central Americans, “you could see millions heading to the United States border.”

People who said they were willing to migrate to the United States had risen from 7-8 percent to 15-16 percent, according to WFP surveys.
