Lula’s team asks court to annul decision that blocks his assets

(Prensa Latina) Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s defense team asked the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil to annul a judge’s decision to block the former president’s assets, the Legal Consultant website reported on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the head judge of the 13th Federal Court of Curitiba, Luiz Antonio Bonat, sent two cases against Lula to the Federal Court of the Federal District (DF), but he maintained a ban on accessing Lula’s assets.

The referral of cases to the DF obeyed the decision by STF Justice Edson Fachin, who annulled Lula’s sentences and restored his political rights.

However, the successor to former Judge Sergio Moro kept Lula’s properties frozen on the argument that Fachin only annulled the decisions regarding criminal proceedings.

Lula’s attorneys assure in the complaint that ‘despite the solar clarity’ of Fachin’s ruling, the Curitiba Court’s sentence insists that a new measure can be issued regarding procedures that, through the deliberations of the STF, they must return to the first stage.

Lula would defeat President Jair Bolsonaro in a runoff if the elections were held in Brazil now, according to a poll conducted between March 11 and 15.
