Child abuse cases increase in Paraguay

(Prensa Latina) Sexual abuse cases in minors decreased by 50 percent during the lockdown due to Covid-19 in Paraguay, but the number of abuses increased after the relaxation of measures, local media highlights on Saturday.

District Attorney Karina Sanchez revealed that 250 accusations are filed per month and the inicial decrease is due to the fact that the victims could not leave their homes to denounce the abuse, a theory also supported by the Public Ministry, ABC daily reported.

Sanchez regretted that there are still high figures similar to last year’s, when they registered over 2,700 child abuse cases and more than 900 child pornography ones.

‘These numbers are telling us that home is not always the safest place for children. Contact with other places and people that are the ones who realize new characteristics in minors helps,’ she said.

She highlighted the support of the General Ombudsman’s Office and the backing of these proceedings when imposing protection measures.
