(Prensa Latina) The possibility of holding elections in Chile in two days the elections initially slated for next April 11th is progressing, following the approval of this proposal of the Government by a mixed commission of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.
After an extensive debate that lasted until Tuesday night, the working group voted this project that seeks to avoid crowds in the voting centers with nine votes in favor and one against from the Christian Democrats.
The initiative foresees the holding of elections on next Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th, when more than 15 million voters will elect mayors, councilors, regional governors and the 155 members of the convention that will draft the new Constitution.
In addition, it also contemplates giving special powers to the Electoral Service, such as dictating the rules for the development of the elections and establishing preferential voting hours for different groups of people.
Also approved with five votes in favor, four against and one abstention was the rule that allows representatives of the different factions to stay overnight on April 10th until the next morning at the polling stations in charge of the polls.
The government’s proposal faced a first stumbling block last week when the Chamber of Deputies rejected it, because although legislators approved it in general, when carrying out the analysis in detail, neither of the two chapters that compose the Chamber obtained the necessary support.
Opponents of the measure raised, above all, concern about possible risks of electoral fraud, with some kind of manipulation of the ballots sometime during the weekend, and they assured that such an important election should enjoy the greatest transparency.
