The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of El Salvador initiated a sanctioning process against the nation’s president, Nayib Bukele, for violating article 175 of the Electoral Code regarding electoral silence.
A statement from the TSE mentions that the basis for the beginning of the procedure is by a press conference by Bukele on February 28, 2021, the date on which the electoral event took place to elect deputies to the Legislative Assembly, Central American Parliament and members. of Municipal Councils.
According to the electoral body, the president violated article 175 by incurring publicity in the middle of the elections, when this is prohibited during the three days prior to the election and on the day of the election itself.
The Supreme Electoral Court recalled the importance of the principle of neutrality of the Powers of the State in the middle of this type of conference, because public relations events could induce citizens to vote in favor of a specific political party or candidate.
The TSE’s pronouncement comes after Bukele urged the population to vote for his political party within hours of the closing of the voting centers.
“Let’s finish closing what we started that day by having a Legislative Assembly that works with the Government (…) I want to call it this afternoon an auction operation,” insisted the Salvadoran president.
At the moment, the electoral authorities are counting the votes. But in social networks the gain of the New Ideas (NI) party is already on the horizon, which has the support of the president.
The day had the participation of more than 3.000 national and international observers.
