Enrique Pita asked the President of the CNE to withdraw the credentials of two international observers

Enrique Pita, vice president of the National Electoral Council (CNE), asked the head of this body, Diana Atamaint, to revoke the accreditations of the international electoral observers accredited for the presidential elections this Sunday.

Pita indicated that there is an emphasis on “presageing that the electoral process is going to be suspended”, but indicated that the elections will take place in a normal way, despite the fact that the ballots for Andean parliamentarians have not yet been printed in their entirety and, probably, not are shipped abroad.

“They say that supposedly there are meetings in the United States to suspend the elections. The only thing that this means is that they are trying to distort this process ”.

In the same way, the vice president of the CNE indicated that he is annoyed because, in his opinion, there are international observers, who are already qualified by the electoral body, and who would try to interfere in the elections.

“How to explain that international observers, qualified by the CNE, allow themselves to make public pronouncements, regarding the supposed fact that the CNE wants to paralyze the process because there is the triumph of a candidate. For this reason, I wrote a letter to the president of the CNE asking for the credentials of these individuals to be withdrawn ”.

It should be remembered that, for this Sunday’s national elections, the CNE accredited a total of 2.540 national electoral observers and 260 international observers.

On the other hand, several experts questioned Pita’s request and indicated that this request contravenes several fundamental rights, since the pre-electoral period, the day of the elections and the post-electoral situation must be evaluated, through a complete and long-term observation, therefore which the pronouncements or alerts of the electoral observers could not be considered as an electoral interference.

In addition, according to the declaration of principles for electoral observation, the country in which the elections are held must guarantee that the international mission of observation of elections will be free to issue, without interference, some public statements and reports on its findings and recommendations regarding of the processes and events related to the election.
