Ecuador’s Foreign Ministry will not process Unasur visas due to reforms to the Mobility Law

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry reported that they will no longer process visa applications from the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), after the reforms to the Mobility Law, which entered into force.

In a statement, they explain that they will continue to process the UNASUR residence visa applications that were submitted before February 5, 2021. As of that date, visa applications of this type will no longer be received or processed.

The reform is applied once it was published in the Official Registry, on February 5. The regulations repealed Chapter VI, relative to UNASUR residence visas, both temporary and permanent.

For foreigners who wish to apply for any other type of residence visa in Ecuador, the Foreign Ministry recommends reviewing the visa section on the Ministry’s website.

The reforms to the Mobility Law also included new grounds for the inadmissibility and deportation of foreign citizens.

All these reforms passed through the Ministry of Law with the objections made by the Executive, because the Legislative Plenary did not reach an agreement to be ratified in the text approved last December.
