Government of Ecuador does not guarantee complete vaccination in infants, alerts Movement for the Defense of Children’s Rights

During this 2021, dozens of families have claimed the absence of the pentavalent vaccine and other drugs in the country’s health centers.

This Wednesday, February 17, 2021, the Social Movement for the Defense of the Rights of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Ecuador expressed its concern at the neglect of the national government in the complete and timely vaccination of the population and especially infants.

The Social Movement for the Defense of the Rights of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Ecuador recalled that with timely vaccination people can protect themselves from some diseases, but they also protect many who cannot be immunized due to serious disease.

Since 2013, according to the organization, the Ministry of Health cannot guarantee a complete vaccination with any drug, therefore, the health of children, adolescents and also of people with a catastrophic disease is put at risk.

In 2020, it was known that 697.624 DPT vaccines, a drug that protects children under 5 years of age against diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus, expired while the country was in the phase of distancing.

During this 2021, dozens of parents have claimed the absence of the pentavalent vaccine in the country’s health centers, as well as there is an absence of the drugs responsible for protecting against chickenpox, pneumococcus, rotavirus and measles.

On the other hand, the Social Movement for the Defense of the Rights of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Ecuador confirmed its concern about the possible return of children to classes, since most have not received reinforcements from their vaccines and they can cause new epidemics of disease previously controlled in the country.

The Ecuadorian state would be in breach of international agreements, as well as the recommendations of expert health organizations on the complete and timely immunization of the country’s child population, according to the statement from the Social Movement for the Defense of Children’s Rights, Adolescence and Youth of Ecuador.
