The municipalities of several cantons of Ecuador analyze stricter measures to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Suspending carnival events and returning to the red light are some of the paths that the authorities are studying.
Added to the arrival of the new British variant of Covid-19 is the saturation of ICUs in hospitals due to the increase in coronavirus infections. Therefore, the cantonal authorities are studying tightening the control measures, to avoid a greater spread and not return to confinement.
The national government is tied by the hands and cannot declare a new state of exception, according to the communication secretary, Caridad Vela, because the Constitutional Court has already declared the last exception of December 21 as unconstitutional.
Municipalities began to combat the Covid-19 pandemic since last September, when the state of exception ended. However, the town councils claimed and continue to suffer debts from the central government, for which many face the coronavirus with limited resources.
The measures most used by local authorities are those of vehicle restriction at different times or by plates as is done in Quito, there is also the reduction of capacity in restaurants and premises, in addition, the sale of liquor is prohibited on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays .
