Iván Duque extends the Victims and Land Restitution Law for 10 years

With the sanction of the president, this law will be in force until June 2031.

This Friday, January 8, 2021, Colombian President Iván Duque sanctioned the Victims and Land Restitution Law for 10 years, which allows compensation to civilians affected by the confrontation and the return of land usurped from peasants.

The president’s decision leaves the law in force until June 2031. The Colombian congress approved the sanction of Duque in a majority in December 2020.

“The new Law, which will now be recognized as 2078 of January 8, 2021, modifies Law 1448 of 2011 ‘by which measures of care, assistance and comprehensive reparation are issued to the victims of the internal armed conflict and other provisions are issued ”Commented the authorities.

For its part, the central government was committed to submitting an annual report to the Congress of the Republic detailed on the development and implementation of this law.

The law for the protection of victims aims to repair the material and moral losses of those affected by the armed conflict in Colombia, which according to the first reports, would be more than 8.7 million people
