Spain is experiencing one of the worst snowstorms in its history, which has paralyzed several cities, trapped cars, suspended La Liga matches and the capital Madrid airport closed. According to the first reports 3 people have died.
The snowfalls in the Spanish territory were constant during the night of Friday and the morning of this Saturday, January 9, 2021. The Ministry of the Interior confirmed that 5 regions of the country were declared on red alert.
Madrid is the city hardest hit by this natural phenomenon. Its bus system had to be suspended, as did garbage collection. In addition, for security reasons, Barajas airport will also be closed this Saturday.
The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, asked citizens to remain calm and stay at home throughout this Saturday, where 20 centimeters more of snow has been announced throughout the day.
