The former president, Elías Antonio Saca, was already sentenced in 2018 to 10 years in prison for embezzlement and money laundering.
The former Salvadoran president, Elías Antonio Saca, and his wife must return more than USD 4.4 million to the state, after being found guilty of illicit enrichment. The former president is already serving a sentence for corruption.
The civil court of San Salvador ruled that Saca pay the state a sum of USD 3’832.698, while his wife, Ana Ligia Mixco de Saca, will have to repay 589.608 dollars. This decision can still be appealed by the family’s attorneys.
Saca is serving a 10-year sentence since 2018, when he was found guilty of embezzlement of public funds and money laundering. On that occasion, the former president had to return USD 260.7 million.
This new sentence also disables the former president from fulfilling any public function for a period of 10 years. Saca is the second president prosecuted in El Salvador for corruption cases, the first was Francisco Flores, who was accused of diverting 15 million dollars donated by Taiwan.
