In Quito, 45% of the population was infected with COVID-19 at a home

Family gatherings and friends at homes are the main cause of COVID-19 infection in Quito. 45% of the population falls ill at home, 30% at work and the rest is divided into agglomerations.

Francisco Pérez, director of Policies and Planning of the Ministry of Health, that it is necessary that, when being with family and at work, biosafety standards must be maintained.

He reported that the city is in community contagion and the pandemic is advancing at great speed. Intensive care units and the healthcare system are overwhelmed and there is a waiting list for beds.

In these first two weeks of January, cases of contagion will be known during the Christmas and New Year’s festivities. The authorities announced that these days are crucial for the evolution of the pandemic.

According to excess mortality data, a comparative analysis of recent years was made. In the Metropolitan District of Quito there are 5.000 thousand deaths in excess and in the country there are 40 thousand. The coastal provinces were the most affected: Santa Elena, Manabí and Guayas.

In Quito, due to this increase in infections and to have greater control of the pandemic, a test is carried out in the parishes that register the greatest contagion (Chillogallo, Guamaní, La Magdalena, Cotocollao and Calderón) to know the situation of the pandemic with the total application 1.700 tests in these sectors.
