After the Ministry of Health reported that in Quito there are two confirmed cases of the new British strain B.1.1.7, of Covid-19, several health professionals expressed their concern because in the Capital and in other cities of the country there would be a community contagion of this variant of the virus.
The MSP indicated that, on January 11, a man had entered the country with a negative PCR test, but later it became known that he was infected with this disease.
In the same way, a 12-year-old teenager is infected with the virus, but she is not related to the other case and has not left the country in the last six months.
For Rodrigo Henríquez, epidemiologist at UDLA, this would mean that in Quito “we are in a community circulation of this variant; since the girl was infected even though she did not leave the country ”.
To prevent the virus from spreading, the Ministry of Health activated some epidemiological fences with relatives of the two infected. Several have symptoms and therefore remain in home isolation.
For his part, the intensivist doctor Alberto Campodónico explained that Guayaquil would not be left behind with this type of patients, but they are not being identified and registered; however, the evolution of the disease indicates a greater complication.
“Since December 20, the mortality rate has increased at the ICU level, more than in previous months. Another point is that this variant progresses very quickly, even if one puts all the medication on it, it progresses very fast, every day they go up from hospital to ICU, I believe that this is because of this new variant ”, he explained.
