Today is the last day to broadcast the general election polls

The media that publish election forecasts as of Friday, January 29, 2021, may be fined up to USD 100.000 and face a 6-month suspension.

This Thursday, January 28, 2020, will be the last day on which electoral polls can be broadcast. Ten days before the first round, February 7, 2021, the forecasts reveal that citizen indecision is between 30% and 60%.

The National Electoral Council confirmed that 19 companies and individuals were qualified to conduct the polls for the next elections. From Friday the media will not be able to publish any electoral forecast or they will be sanctioned with up to USD 100.000 and a 6-month suspension.

Experts consider that the high levels of indecision that have been registered arise from the large number of presidential binomials, it is the highest since the return to democracy. In addition, there is a sense of lack of representation on the part of citizens.

For the exit results, the CNE enabled five individuals and a company to make this forecast, where it can be predicted where the undecided vote went.

Another phenomenon of these elections that the candidates are using is the “useful vote”, which includes electing a presidential candidate who is not the favorite, but has the chances of winning.

The first electoral round will be next Sunday, February 7, 2021, where Ecuadorians will elect their next authorities as president, vice president and legislators for a period of 4 years. The presidential election can reach a second round, which will be held on Sunday, April 11.
