So far in January, there have been six massacres in the country; and the murder of five ex-combatants and 14 social leaders.
The Special Jurisdiction of Peace (JEP) of Colombia warned this Tuesday that the beginning of 2021 is being the most violent since, in 2016, the peace agreements were signed between the Government and the demobilized Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP).
In its latest report, the JEP indicates that its conclusions are “worrying”, since from January 1 to January 24 there have been six massacres, five murders of demobilized guerrillas and subject to the peace process, three harassments and 14 homicides committed against social leaders.
In turn, the JEP Prosecutor’s Office has reported 14 armed clashes between “criminal structures” and another seven between illegal groups. “During the period examined, a massacre was also recorded every four days,” the document explains, leaving “18 victims, including two children.”
The JEP also pointed out that a former FARC guerrilla is murdered every five days, so it is necessary for the Government to comply with the agreements signed in 2016 in Havana, since many of them still have appointments with the courts.
Although the report indicates that activity by FARC-EP dissidents and paramilitary squads has been detected in the municipalities where these murders have been committed, the presence of this type of illegal armed structures “does not explain” in itself the reasons why these crimes occur.
On the other hand, violence against social leaders does not stop either, according to the JEP report. In addition to the murders, one every 41 hours, the threats and harassment of people who exercise a leadership role in their municipalities continue to grow, especially in those where illegal armed groups dispute the income from drug trafficking.
