UN predicts pandemic will leave 32 million people in extreme poverty

This Thursday, December 3, 2020, the United Nations (UN) presented a report detailing that 32 million more people will fall into extreme poverty. The main cause of this figure is the global pandemic of Covid-19.

The percentage of people living in extreme poverty in the 47 least developed countries is set to increase from 32.5% to 35.7%. Currently, people living in these precarious conditions represent 50% of the world’s population.

According to UN studies, these 47 countries managed to fight the pandemic, but the economic consequences were dire. “The crisis will reverse years of meticulous progress in social areas,” the experts detail.

Extreme poverty, according to the UN concept, is the condition that people living on less than USD 1.90 a day have to face. The Organization hopes that this report will attract the attention of world powers and that they can help the poorest countries in the coming years.
