Airports intensify controls this holiday season

At the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil, the waiting rooms were transferred to the parking lot. Large tents with plastic chairs were installed there.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, companions have been prohibited from entering the air terminal building, so they must wait on an outside sidewalk, signposted for distancing.

This is how hundreds of Ecuadorians living abroad are received, who come to Guayaquil for Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties.

The season led to extreme biosecurity measures, so new signage was installed and there is a restriction on the number of family members who come to receive travelers.

Controls on the application of sanitary protection measures are also carried out at the Quito air terminal.

The General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) indicated that a “strict control of capacity” is planned.

The entity announced that since last June when international flights in Ecuador were reactivated, the arrival of passengers increased from 7.473 to 32.477 in October.

According to the DGAC, this increase also occurred because as of September 14, air frequencies were expanded to 100% of the usual capacity in international and domestic commercial operations in all the country’s airports. Although its operation depends on each airline, depending on the demand.

In Guayaquil, from December 1, for each vehicle only one person can enter to pick up family or friends arriving at the airport.

Ángel Córdova, manager of Tagsa, which operates the terminal area of the Buenos Aires city, commented that the measure aims to reduce the sources of contagion and agglomeration. Aspect that was ratified yesterday by the Cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE).

According to the manager in the last quarter, the José Joaquín de Olmedo went from operating 32 international flight frequencies a week to receiving 74 weekly, in November.

Meanwhile, Luis Galárraga, communication manager of Quiport, operator of the Quito airport, said that this month actions such as the closing of the terminal doors are contemplated, at the moment the building’s allowed capacity is filled. The capital has resumed 65% of its routes and frequencies.

International travelers arriving in Ecuador must present a negative PCR test for coronavirus upon arrival, issued up to 10 days before arrival.
