UNESCO admits nomination of “pasillos” as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) accepted the nomination made by Ecuador for the Hall to be considered as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

With the admission of the file, the first phase of the nomination process concludes, which will allow to advance to the following stages, which are the evaluation and final examination by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in its sixteenth session in November / December of 2021.

The National Institute of Cultural Heritage prepared the technical file and the Safeguarding Plan to apply for this cultural manifestation on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. East

The preparation of the file had the participation of about 300 people in workshops held in Ambato, Latacunga, Riobamba, Portoviejo, Los Ríos, Guayaquil, Machala, Cuenca, Loja and Quito, where all the information obtained with the holders of knowledge was analyzed. and actors involved, in order to determine the characteristics, social function, validity and representativeness of this manifestation.

The document was delivered in March of this year to the office of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris, through the Foreign Ministry and the permanent mission of Ecuador in UNESCO.

The Ecuadorian Corridor has certain characteristics that are linked to deep historical, social and cultural frameworks, as well as to meanings, values, functions, uses and traditional forms that have been transmitted from generation to generation.

«It is an expression of the musical identity of Ecuador, it represents a poem that is sung, it is an unforgettable music that when we sing or listen to it we will have recognized, understood and loved our country, as it is nourished by the sentimental manifestations of the coastal cholo, the Montubio and also the city dweller “, says the statement from the National Heritage Institute.

In addition to being an element of musical identity by itself, the corridor also strengthens the identity through its lyrics, when they address characteristic and iconic themes of the land, which contribute to unite the communities that listen and interpret it.

The corridor continues on its way to be recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
