Russia declares people “not pleasant” to two Colombian diplomats

The decision of the world power is based on the fact that the South American country expelled two Russian diplomats from its territory on suspicion of espionage.

This Wednesday, December 23, 2020, Russia declared two members of the Colombian diplomatic mission in Moscow as “non gratas”. Previously, the South American country had expelled two Russian diplomats from its territory.

Colombia expelled two Russian diplomats accusing them of violating the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. The Colombian ambassador to Russia, Alfonso López Caballero, was summoned to the prosecution to explain what happened in his country.

The Russian authorities informed López Caballero that, starting from the principle of reciprocity, Moscow will appoint two people from the Colombian diplomatic mission in Russia “non gratas”.

Additionally, the world power questioned the Colombian decision, considering that they do not correspond to the traditional “friendly relations” between the countries.

Colombian President Iván Duque did not clarify the reason for his decision, however, several media outlets speculate that the decision was based on suspicions of espionage. Those expelled had been trying to obtain information from the telecommunications of the South American country.

Colombia issued a statement through its Foreign Ministry, where it makes clear that it intends “to maintain the good level that has traditionally marked diplomatic, commercial and cooperation relations with the Russian Federation.”
