“It is an interesting and very well done work, which maintains a unity as a project”, said the jury
With the text “Biopsia Blues”, with the pseudonym “Morgana”, the Ecuadorian writer Luis Carlos Mussó Mujica won the Jaime Sabines International Poetry Prize this year.
The State Council for Cultures and the Arts (Coneculta-Chiapas), Mexico, released the results on December 9, 2020.
The writer of “Tiniebla de esplendor” (2006), Mea Vulgatae (2014), Rostros de la medio del mundo (2015), among others, received an economic prize of 100,000 pesos and the edition of the work.
Armando Alanís Pulido, Roxana Elvridge-Thomas and Carmen Villoro made up the jury for this year’s Award. In their decision, they point out that the work of the Ecuadorian “is an interesting and very well done work, which maintains a unity as a project.”
Biopsy Blues deals with the death of the father. On this subject, the jury mentioned: “He makes, without intending to, a tribute to the poem“ Something about the death of Mayor Sabines ”, by Jaime Sabines, showing an excellent use of the prose poem and all its resources, as well as rhetorical resources like alliteration and anaphora, which print rhythm and melody to the texts ”.
The jury added: “This is translated into new, daring and original images and metaphors, which constitute a style of its own sustained throughout the book. The aesthetic quality is maintained from beginning to end of the collection of poems. The above qualities endow the work with an emotional force that communicates human pain at the loss of a loved one and reveals our condition as organic beings, marked by life and death ”.
