The approval of the bill occurred after more than 20 hours of marathon debate in the lower house of the South American country.
The Chamber of Deputies of Argentina approved this Friday morning, in a historic day, the opinion of the project of Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy (IVE).
After more than 20 hours of discussion, the deputies decided, with 131 votes in favor, 117 against and six abstentions, to accept the bill by which abortion is decriminalized.
The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Sergio Massa, reported that the bill goes to the Senate for discussion and eventual approval.
Immediately after the result of the vote was known, thousands of people who held a vigil outside the legislature celebrated what is considered the half sanction granted to the IVE bill.
The bill, promoted by the Government of President Alberto Fernández, allows free and legal access to abortion until the 14th week of gestation.
