The former president faces a 10-year prison sentence and a fine of 1 million euros.
This Monday, November 30, 2020, the trial against the former French president, Nicolás Sarkozy, who is accused of corruption and influence peddling, resumed. The former president stated that the charges against him are “infamy.”
In his first meeting with a judge in the resumption of the trial against him, Sarkozy commented that he refuses to “accept” the infamies against him, which according to the president “they have persecuted him for 6 years.”
The former president’s defense seeks the nullity of the case and challenges its validity. Jacqueline Laffont, Sarkozy’s lawyer, said that the entire process has been “tainted” by “numerous abuses” and “repeated grave violations” of the rights of the defense.
Nicolás Sarkozy could be sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption and influence peddling. The “eavesdropping” case showed the former president along with others trying to bribe Gilbert Azibert, who worked in the cassation court. The former president sought to obtain information “under secret” and influence the “Bettencourt case.”
The French justice also accuses Sarkozy of obtaining financing from Libya, due to his close relationship with Muammar Gaddafi, for his presidential campaign in 2007.
