The controversial article penalizes the dissemination of images of police officers on social networks.

The French Senate suspended in a parliamentary majority the discussion on article 24 of the new security law that limits the dissemination of images of police officers in action.

The president of the LREM parliamentary group, which has a presidential majority in the National Assembly, Christophe Castaner, reported at a press conference that “we are going to propose a complete new wording of article 24” of the Global Security Law.

He also insisted that it is not intended to limit the freedom of the press and free expression of citizens, but to prevent images of agents with personal data and threats from appearing on social networks.

Castaner stressed that “we know that there are still doubts” about the article. At the same time, he recognized that “when there is misunderstanding, you have to know how to listen.”

Tens of thousands of people across France marched against this bill last Saturday, following its first reading approval in the lower house.
