Prisons in Ecuador register an increase in violent deaths during 2020

From January to October 2019, 29 violent deaths were registered in prisons, while in the same period of 2020 the figure increased to 37.

Despite the police and military intervention, which is applied for the second consecutive year, there is an increase in crimes committed inside the rehabilitation centers in the country.

The operations carried out during the state of emergency revealed that the persons deprived of liberty are armed.

Since August, 450 operations have been carried out in which the following were seized:

-2.500 knives

-633 cell phones

-16 firearms

The militarization of the centers momentarily stopped the fights and riots between the inmates.

In the same way, the relocation of the most dangerous detainees and other strategies, relatively slowed the escalation of violence.

“A campaign was carried out for a culture of peace in which the inmates handed over around 2.950 prohibited items,” said Eduardo Moncayo, director of the service for those deprived of liberty.

“At the moment the plastering, security painting, cameras are being carried out,” added Moncayo.

However, faced with this worrying situation, the lack of prison security agents is reported in various prisons in the country. (C.D.A.)
