Swiss woman dies climbing Cotopaxi volcano

Two of her compatriots were also wounded in the accident that took place as she crossed a crevasse while making the 5,900-metre ascent.

Corina Puentener, a 57-year-old Swedish tourist died after falling into a crevasse while climbing the Cotopaxi volcano. The woman was accompanied by Roland Meier, 50, and Philip Zehnder, 58, who suffered minor injuries.

Survivors were transferred to Jose Rivas shelter for medical attention. Paramedics arrived at the scene in an ambulance of Ambato’s ECU911.

The National Police Special Operations Group (GOE) also mobilized from Quito and Tungurahua to attend this emergency, as well as members of Latacunga’s Fire Department.

The three foreigners would have arrived in a group of six tourists on November 1. They registered their visit to the Cotopaxi volcano through the northern entrance (El Pedregal de Machachi).
