Tourists will have access to a safe-conduct to circulate for 15 days in Quito

The document will be issued through the hotels that have been authorized by the Municipality.

The hotels authorized by the Municipality of Quito will grant from next December 2 a special safe-conduct for tourists staying at their facilities.

The vice mayor of Quito, Santiago Guarderas, indicated that the document will be valid for 15 days and will allow visitors to circulate for as long as they are staying in the capital.

The Cabildo’s Mobility Secretariat announced last Monday that this new option will be available on the same website that is used to obtain driving licenses by medical appointment or transfer to the airport.

Patricio Velásquez, technical manager of Quito Tourism, explained that the initiative covers about 170 accommodation establishments, which, he assured, comply with biosafety protocols.

According to the official, between January and August 2020 the occupancy rate in hotels in the capital was 7.41% and that with these measures it is now expected to reach, at least, 17%.

In the case of the Quito Chamber of Commerce (CCQ), its president, Patricio Alarcón, said that beyond the creation of safe-conduct, priority should be given to controlling informality and monitoring the capacity of establishments and compliance with the measures biosafety.

According to the Chamber of Commerce, it is estimated that due to the aftermath of the pandemic the country will lose about USD 20 billion in sales and only USD 2 billion in December.

Mauricio Letort, president of the Quito Metropolitan Hotels Board (HQM), stated that the initiative regulated by the Cabildo is good, but he hopes that all establishments will be part of the registry in the Ministry of Tourism.
