The UN fears that the killing of civilians will turn into war crimes.
The international human rights organization, Amnesty International, confirmed this Friday the first massacre of civilians in the Ethiopian conflict that occurred this Monday, the victims are peasants who were in the town
The technicians verified that the images obtained had not been manipulated or edited, and verified by geolocation that they had been taken in the town of Mai Kadra.
As part of the investigation, Amnesty International also reported that none of those killed or injured had any role in the clashes between the Ethiopian Defense Force, the National Army and armed militants from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front.
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Friday gave rebel forces an ultimatum to surrender in the next three days in the northern region of Tigray.
The United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, warned of the risk that the situation in Tigray could spiral out of control and that the killing of civilians could turn into war crimes.
Likewise, she has indicated that although communications with Tigray are interrupted, making it difficult to verify the extent of the damage, her office has received information from various sources about increasing aerial bombardments by government forces as well as fierce ground combat.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs specified that its workers have not been able to return food, health supplements and other emergency supplies due to lack of access to the place.
Ethiopia is one of the best-armed nations in Africa, and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front dominated the Ethiopian Army and Government before Abiy took office in 2018. It has a lot of experience in conflict, following the border war between Ethiopia and Eritrea, next to the Tigray.
