Carchi, Esmeraldas and Sucumbios analyze possible opening of borders between Ecuador and Colombia

Each provincial jurisdiction must develop its sanitary protocols.

This Thursday, October 29, 2020, the authorities of the provinces of Esmeraldas, Sucumbíos and Carchi studied the mechanisms that can be implemented, for a possible opening of land and maritime borders with Colombia.

The governor of Carchi, Oscar Ruano, reported in a meeting he had with his peers from the other provinces, they agreed that “each provincial jurisdiction builds its health protocols”, to avoid the increase of Covid-19 infections in those areas.

The measures that each province implements must be applied to transportation, tourism, economy, agriculture, formal and informal trade, imports and exports. The authorities must also implement a humanitarian corridor and other actions to prevent the flight of foreign currency.

Given the possible opening of these borders, the creation of a security cabinet was established that will be in charge of receiving some concerns from authorities and experts, to share them with their Colombian counterparts and make a joint decision.

In the city of Tulcán, authorities continue to ask that the Rumichaca international bridge be opened in 2021, because the local health system could collapse. On the other hand, the province of Sucumbíos is asking for the economy to be revitalized so that families can recover.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, Esmeraldas registers 4,202 positive cases of Covid-19; Carchi reached 3,007 infections and the province of Sucumbíos has 2,735 infected and Ecuador is already in 166,302 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
