Ecuadorian indigenous leaders deny retention of police officers in October protests

Leonidas Iza, president of the MICC, assures that the government’s persecution against the indigenous movement continues

Indigenous leaders held a march to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), in Quito, where Leonidas Iza and Jaime Vargas will render a version of the alleged kidnapping in the Agora of the House of Culture during the protests in October 2019.

Leonidas Iza, president of the Cotopaxi Peasant Indigenous Movement (MICC), said that this is a government persecution.

“The October protests were not a response to the summons of the leaders, but of the majority of the peoples and nationalities of Ecuador. Now that they ask us to render a version on October 10, 2019, indeed the world knows that Inocencio Tucumbi was murdered and what they were asking for at that time was answers about this crime, “he added.

The Prosecutor’s Office investigates the events that occurred on October 10, 2019, when a National Assembly of indigenous communities was held in the Agora of the House of Culture and they kept several policemen in the place to explain what happened with the death of Inocencio Tucumbi, which happened the day before and which they claim was due to police brutality.

In addition, there were journalists who assured that they were not being held against their will, while others asked to be released.

Jaime Vargas, president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationality of Ecuador (CONAIE), has reiterated that it is part of the persecution against him and pointed out, in January of this year, that he never detained anyone.

«I would like them to show me what they are denouncing, where I myself was kidnapping or detaining the person. I arrived when they were already inside, ”he said.

This October 26, 2020, Vargas insists that it is a political vendetta against the indigenous movement and assured that they will respond to all calls from the Prosecutor’s Office about what happened a year ago.
