At least 4.000 people nationwide will participate in marches on the afternoon of this Thursday, October 22, against the policies implemented by the Government.
Fausto Salinas, commander of the Police of the Metropolitan District of Quito, pointed out that an operation to control and maintain public order has been implemented throughout the country and that in the case of the capital, it is expected that 1.000 protesters will gather.
In a television interview, Salinas commented that there is information that most of the participants are peaceful, but pointed out that there is always a group of infiltrators who seek to cause chaos and that for that there are specialized Police personnel who will be on the lookout.
Yesterday, the general commander of the National Police, Patricio Carrillo, explained that as a result of previous inquiries with the Prosecutor’s Office, those who have begun to put graffiti in the city since October 1, those who have war speeches, have been identified to hold them responsible , as well as the managers of the organizations that are going to march.
In turn, the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo, expressed that they hope that they will be peaceful protests, as they have been “usually”.
According to Salinas, 1.000 police officers will guard the capital, apart from other teams that will be on the lookout for infiltrators who may appear.
The District commander said that he has spoken with the authorities of the Municipality to help protect the heritage of the city.
“We believe that they will not have the levels of last year and exercise their right to protest without damaging property and people,” he exclaimed.
The mayor of Quito, Jorge Yunda, insisted that the city faces a difficult situation due to the Covid-19 pandemic, for which he urged to avoid crowds and violence.
“We all have the right to demonstrate, to express ourselves peacefully. But we will not allow the capital city to continue to be vandalized, even more so the Historic Center, ”he said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Unitary Front of Workers (FUT), Mesías Tatamuez, said that the protests will be peaceful and that students, workers and teachers have been summoned.
The day is called for 4:00 p.m. in the Caja del Seguro in Quito and also in the provinces, in order to reject unemployment, corruption, budget cuts and demand that the Constitutional Court (CC) process and convene to the demands of unconstitutionality to the Humanitarian Support Law
