81 femicides have been registered in the last ten months in Ecuador

62 of them would have occurred since the health emergency by Covid-19 was decreed.

The Alliance for the Monitoring and Mapping of Femicides reported that from January 1 to October 4, 2020, 81 femicides have been registered, 62 of them were documented since the health emergency was decreed by Covid-19.

Since August 14, 2014, the date on which the Comprehensive Organic Criminal Code (COIP) introduces femicides as a typified crime, 813 women have been murdered due to sexist violence in Ecuador.

In March, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, warned governments not to neglect violence against women, which may be unleashed within the framework of the curfew caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

This alarm was not to be overlooked in Ecuador where every 72 hours a woman, girl or adolescent is a victim of femicidal violence. In 72% of the cases, the aggressors are part of the victim’s family circle.

In addition, the orphan left by these murders is added, since 56% of the victims are mothers and therefore there would be 85 minors affected by this problem.
