Chile: police brutality marks the end of the electoral campaign for the constitutional plebiscite

The elections expect a participation of 60% of the citizens, due to the fear of Covid-19 and due to the great absenteeism that Chile registers since voting ceased to be mandatory in 2012.

This Friday, October 23, 2020, Chile closed the electoral campaign for the constitutional plebiscite, where citizens will decide whether or not to continue with the constitution inherited from the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship.

The supporters of the “approve” gathered in the Baquedano square in the capital, Santiago. This place was the epicenter for many Chileans since the “social outbreak” began, in October 2019.

The protesters have been demanding the difficult access to basic services suffered by many Chileans, also on inequality and against police abuses.

Plaza Baquedano and other important sectors of the Chilean capital have always been protected by the police and the military. The forces of order have used fire hydrant trucks and hundreds of troops to disperse, with violence, the citizens.

The next elections in Chile have 14 million eligible voters; However, a participation of no more than 60% is expected due to the fear of the coronavirus and also due to the great absenteeism that the country registers since voting ceased to be mandatory in 2012.
