The emblematic work will provide irrigation to 12 thousand hectares of crops in seven parishes.
With a purification ceremony, in one of the most symbolic places in Pichincha, such as the pyramids of Cochasqui, the delivery signature of the Pedro Moncayo-Cayambe Irrigation Canal was carried out.
Farmers have been demanding the work for more than 40 years to produce the lands of the two cantons.
Benjamín Tarabata, former president of the Cayambe Pedro Moncayo Development, Integrated Water and Environmental Management Consortium (CODEMIA) walked and fought since 1995 for this project to be realized.
He related the difficulties that farmers had in accessing water and being able to cultivate their land.
Now, said the Prefect Paola Pabón, Pichincha will be a productive province. She pointed out that the work is a means for production and for food sovereignty.
«We receive this work with great pride, pride of the Pichincha people who have historically fought for water. The water that will flow through this canal is the memory of thousands of Pichinchanos who fought for water, ”added Paola Pabón.
Alexandro Tonello, vice-prefect of Pichincha, announced that the canal enables a technified agriculture, which will guarantee the efficient use of water, friendly to the environment and that allows the farmer to access national and international markets.
It is an emblematic work that will provide irrigation to 12 thousand cultivated hectares, benefiting about 10 thousand families directly.
The canal will guarantee the water supply for the Olmedo, Ayora, Tupigachi, La Esperanza, Tabacundo, Tocachi and Malchinguí parishes, in the Cayambe and Pedro Moncayo cantons.
