Ecuadorian students protested against government measures

The students are preparing for a day of protests for next October 22.

The Federation of University Students of Ecuador (FEUE) rejected the appointment of Mauricio Pozo as the new Minister of Economy.

During the demonstration, the young people insisted that Pozo is part of the policy of reducing the budget to the universities and demanded that the justice not allow former minister Richard Martínez to leave the country, whom they accused of increasing the foreign debt and therefore the economic crisis in the country.

The leaders Camila Aguirre and Mauricio Chiluisa demand the reinstatement of teachers.

Aguirre pointed out that what is sought is a dignified life and that what is requested is a budget for education and not for corruption.

Chiluisa said that it is a USD 98 million cut in the budget for universities through the ruling of the Constitutional Court and added that more than 1,230 teachers have been fired.

He argued that the withdrawal of resources to universities is part of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and that Pozo has shown not only now, but years ago that he wants to reduce the budget for higher education centers.

He expressed that they will join a day of protest on October 22 in which the Unitary Front of Workers and the Popular Front will also participate.
